A rocky outcrop which dominates the skyline above Dumbarton, Lang Craigs is home to sheltered glens.

A mix of ancient woodland and recent planting, sheltered glens, jagged outcrops, from which its takes it name and rugged moorland lies in a spectacular setting at the foot of the Kilpatrick Hills.

Approximately 1.5km to the north of Milton. It comprises of a southwest facing basalt outcrop with rock ledges supporting species rich tall herb communities.

The Woodland Trust's largest site in the west of Scotland, it offers superb hiking, fascinating flora, an abundance of wildlife and wonderful views of the Clyde, Dumbarton Rock and Ben Lomond.

It is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and one of the 14 Commonwealth Woods chosen as part of the Legacy of the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Over the next few years more than 200,000 trees, including oak, birch and Scots pine, will be planted at the site.

Start and Finish Points

By foot these crags can be found from Overtoun House and following the signs for Lang Craigs Circular Path which will take you up and round the crags. To walk to Overtoun House from Dumbarton East train station turn left onto Glasgow Road and then turn left into Greenhead Road and follow till Stirling Road (A82) and near The Abbotsford Hotel, cross the A82 into Barnhill Road and follow up until you see Milton Brae footpath on the left before Hunter's Avenue. Follow the path behind the houses till the path forks and take the right fork then turn left into Overtoun Estate and follow this road until you see Overtoun House and the signboard with the path details. By vehicle park at Overtoun House which can be found from Stirling Road (A82) take the turn into Milton Brae at Logspan in Milton. Follow this road until it forks and take the right fork into Overtoun Estate and park in the area provided and follow the by foot directions.
