Dalmuir Drop Lock – Dumbarton Rd – Miller St-Canal

Clydebank old Masonic Hall was built in 1924 and is one of the few buildings in Clydebank to escape the Blitz during World War 2. Across the road, Clydebank Town Hall built in 1902 and the Library built-in 1913 also remarkably remained intact after the Blitz.

When you reach the canal, pause for a moment, as you look across the canal you can see the site of the world-famous Singer Sewing Machine factory, now gone. At its height, the factory was the largest in the world producing sewing machines.

The iconic four-faced clock which dominated the Clydebank skyline for decades had the reputation for being the heaviest of its kind in the world. The natural vegetation of reeds is ideal nesting for the many species of water birds that inhabit the canal – ducks, moorhen, coots and swans. Herons also glide up and down the canal.

Coarse fish such as perch, roach and pike populate the canal and it is a popular site for fishing. There are numerous amounts of wildlife in this area such as deer, moles, hedgehog, rats, mice and foxes. Look out for birds such as swans, grey herons, various species of duck, moorhens, coots and various seabirds.
